With a desire to take conversations from Melissa Johnson's popular lifestyle blog, Best Friends For Frosting® to a new, engaged level of fun, Melissa launched the “Best Friends For Frosting®” podcast. This joyful podcast encourages listeners to become the very best version of themselves and to celebrate a life they love inside and out. Can’t wait to see you there!
Whether you’re decorating your new office or you need a refresh for your existing office, I am so excited to share some fun tricks with you on how to make your office feel like it is a reflection of you and your brand! For ultimate success, you have to bring your whole self to the table (or should I say desk), and an office is a perfect reflection of your own personal branding. I applied this same formula when branding our #SOBestFriendsForFrosting Airbnb as well! Your office should make you happy the minute you step inside. It should be an instant mood uplifter! Taking the time to put together a space you love will make you that much more productive.
Create a “secret Pinterest board” of things that inspire you. Whether it be other people’s offices, decor pieces, furniture, color palettes – create this board as a reference. Seeing a visual of your favorite things will give you a clearer and more defined vision of what you love. Bonus tip: Many times, I have pinned pictures of things that I don’t love as a whole, but love aspects of it. Be sure to pin pictures of things you love aspects of and identify what it is that you love about that picture and how you can work that angle into your own space.
Determine Your Colors
Think of color palettes you would like to integrate into your space and determine what goes well together. I often will grab free paint swatches from Home Depot and pair colors side by side. I love bright and airy colors like soft pink, light blue, gold, tiny touches of hot pink, navy blue, white and grass green.
Identify Themes, Trends, and Patterns
Are there certain trends, themes and patterns that you love? I am obsessed with Pineapples, Gingham, and, the Ocean. They make me feel nostalgic, calm, and happy! I often try to repeat these themes throughout our home – and especially my office. I scored cute gold pineapples for like $20 from Home Goods, an Ocean picture from Minted, and sea shells from Amazon and my grandma’s house.
Turn a Trend Into Your Signature Trademark
I knew we would be taking a lot of photos in my office. When the gingham trend starting hitting hard again, I wanted our readers to associate Best Friends For Frosting with the gingham pattern subconsciously. So in 2016, I started incorporating gingham into our blog posts, outfits and the wall paper in our office. Pink was already a big signature color to our brand so marrying it with pink gingham wallpaper was a hit. Pinterest ended up doing a case study on Pinterest’s top Business Accounts, highlighting how we repeated gingham throughout our branding. So whether you love grasscloth, leopard, stripes, whatever – make it your thing! By the way, wallpaper is not crazy hard to install and does not break the bank. You could even do an accent wall like I did. I ended up getting the self-adhesive wallpaper that sticks to your wall like a sticker. Simple!
Less is More
You want your office to feel like a calm place with little to no distractions (besides our cell phones and 7 other browsers open on the computer- JK!). Make sure to eliminate as much clutter as possible. Have things you absolutely need in storage boxes or tucked away in a neatly organized drawer. The goal is to have your desk and shelves clean, simple and organized with things you only have an instant purpose to use and that you love to look at!
I am so excited for you to take your office to the next level. This will be so much fun! Make those Pinterest boards, hit the sales, and get inspired! You will be SOOOO happy you did it today instead of waiting until next year!
